After two muggy, rainy nights back to back with Viktorija Gecyte and Go Trio on their Spring Fever Tour... mostly I’m singing “C’est si Bon.” This was the first song of their first set both nights, and those three little words sum up Gene Perla, Sean Gough, and Doug Hirlinger, bass, piano, and drums respectively, in suit and tie, shoes shined; "C’est si Bon" says everything they want from music. The Go Trio backs into each song, confident, no tricks, simply yielding. So far as these two nights with The Go Trio are concerned, damned if I heard any trouble in paradise; I mean, there were no disconnects. And when everything clicks and you are the bass, you are the piano, you are the drums–who has time to “plot your coordinates”? You feel so free.

Viktorija Gecyte (get-CHEET-hey) has a voice like a great big champagne-colored Brougham d’Elegance. New tires. Chrome wheels with no rust on the spokes. A range that gets eight miles to the gallon, tops—but what eight miles. “Blue Skies,” “Honeysuckle Rose,” “We’ll Be Together Again.” She hit every note in its resonant center, kept her phrasing just at cruising power and sang long lines, some clear, some in shadow. And what a moment when she’d stamp her gladiator sandal on the downbeat to start a blues. But “C’est si Bon” was the song for me. For those of you about to swoon, she salutes you with, 'It’s so good/To whisper sweet words/Little nothings/But little nothings that can be said again and again.'

For Gecyte, singing is nothing less, and nothing more, than musical conversation. "I like preparing to be comfortable, so I can respond to everybody and anything," she says. "I find singing very emotional and sensual. Vocalist Viktorija Gecyte began singing in her native Lithuania at 5, and began jazz at 11. She says the selections she performs from "The Great American Songbook" are well known in her native country. Spontaneous, intimate, sensual and fun are descriptions that could be applied to Gecyte's singing, which displays a confidence that belies her age.

Viktorija Gecyte (geh-CHEE-tah) is a Lithuanian-born, Paris-based vocalist who's steeped in the Jazz tradition. Earnestly delivering standards such as "That Old Black Magic" and "Night And Day" at Chris' (Philadelphia) with a sweet, unaffected voice and an engaging smile, it was surprising to find her singing without a noticeable accent, but lo and behold, she went to Lafayette College in Easton, PA. In Paris, she finds work singing in English and is in demand for her lack of an accent and her sense of swing, two things lacking in Franch native vocalists. She was touring this night with Go Trio, a very in-the-pocket crew headed by well-documented bassist Gene Perla, pianist Sean Gough, and drummer Jon Arkin.

Gene Perla may not be one of the best-known bassists in jazz, but his pedigree is undeniable. He spent the early 1970s accompanying Elvin Jones, just a few short years after the legendary drummer left the employ of John Coltrane, and his impressive résumé also includes Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Nina Simone and Sonny Rollins. The Go Trio offers the 72-year-old Perla the chance to delve into the jazz songbook with a younger generation, namely pianist Sean Gough and drummer Doug Hirlinger. For this stop they’ll also be accompanied by vocalist Viktorija Gecyte, whose smoky hues are ideal for seductive renderings of “My Foolish Heart” or “I’ll Remember April” but come fully alive when she tackles folk songs from her native Lithuania.
